Europa League 2nd Qualifying Round 2nd Legs

Mladost Podgorica’s European run is over after a 4-3 aggregate defeat to Albanian side Kukesi. Mladost won the first leg in Albania 1-0, but they were overwhelmed in the second leg. Kukesi raced into a 3-0 lead on the night before half time, with goals from Santos, Pejic and Flores. Mladost did try to mount a fightback, but the 3 goal task was just too hard. Scepanovic pulled one back on the hour mark, but Pejic restored Kukesi’s advantage 10 minutes later with his second goal. Adzovic scored late on for Mladost, but it was no more than a consolation for the Montenegrin side.

Lokomotiva Zagreb were heavily beaten 6-0 in their second leg match against PAOK, losing 7-2 on aggregate. The Croatian side pulled off a shock win in Zagreb, but the Greek side turned on the style in Thessaloniki. PAOK went 3-0 up inside 14 minutes with goals from Perez, Mak and Pelkas. Kitsiou then scored on 34 minutes to make it 4-0 to the Greeks. The day became even worse as Tomislav Mrcela scored a bizarre own goal to make it 5-0. A PAOK cross was cleared away from the goal, but it hit Mrcela in the face and bounced into the goal. Robert Mak completed the rout on 84 minutes to round off an awful day for the Zagreb side.

Zeljeznicar Sarajevo will meet Standard Liege in the 3rd Qualifying Round after a 3-0 aggregate victory over Hungarian side Ferencvaros. The Bosnian side had been the first to beat Ferencvaros at the Groupama Arena since October 2014, and brought a tight 1-0 lead back to Sarajevo. After 23 minutes, Kokot scored to put Zeljeznicar 2-0 up on aggregate, before Djelmic sealed the win with a stoppage time goal.

Vojvodina also progressed to the 3rd Qualifying Round after a 4-1 aggregate win against the Latvian side Spartaks Jurmala. Vojvodina won the first leg 3-0 in Novi Sad, and they looked like they would also win the second leg after Kordic scored an 86th minute goal in Latvia. However, Spartaks scored an equaliser on 93 minutes from Vivacqua, but it meant nothing. Vojvodina will now face Italian giants Sampdoria in the next round. Sampdoria were led to the Europa League by manager Sinisa Mihajlovic, who used to play for Vojvodina between 1988 and 1990, but Mihajlovic will not face his former side as he took the AC Milan job in June.

Rabotnicki Skopje have qualified for the 3rd Qualifying Round with a 2-1 aggregate win over Latvian side Jelgava. The Macedonian side lost 1-0 in Latvia, but they were able to overturn the deficit in Skopje. Ilijoski and Sahiti both scored inside 16 minutes to put Rabotnicki in front, and they held on to set up a tie against Turkish side Trabzonspor

Cukaricki were knocked out after a 2-1 defeat to Azerbaijani side Gabala. Cukaricki led after a 1-0 win in Serbia, but the result was overturned in Azerbaijan. Zenjov scored twice for Gabala to knock Cukaricki out.

Rijeka were unable to overturn a 3 goal deficit as they were knocked out 5-2 on aggregate against Scottish side Aberdeen. Rijeka had been on the end of a hugely surprising result as they were beaten 3-0 at home. However, Rijeka came very close to pulling off an incredible comeback. Within 63 minutes of the 2nd leg at Pittodrie, they had scored twice through Tomasov and Kvrzic, leaving them just a goal away from extra time. Unfortunately for Rijeka they then managed to concede twice in 8 minutes from McGinn and Hayes, putting them out of the competition.

Hajduk Split overturned a one goal deficit to knock Koper out 6-4 on aggregate. The first leg in Slovenia had been an exciting affair, with Koper running out 3-2 winners, but Hajduk were very strong in the second leg. Hajduk scored 2 in the first half at the Poljud, with goals from Kis and Jefferson, but Palcic pulled one back for Koper just before half time. This left the aggregate score at 4-4 at half time, with Hajduk leading on the away goals rule. However, Hajduk would not need the rule, with second half goals from Caktas and Maglica setting up a tie against Norwegian side Stormsgodset.
